History of blow moulding in the manufacturing of motorcycle tanks

Blow moulding of plastics for the manufacturing of motorcycle tanks arises from the glass blowing technique. Hanoch Ferngren and William Kopitke made the first machine for this process; it was then sold to the Hartford Empire Company, in 1937. This breakthrough determined the birth of commercial blowing.

The first use of blow moulding

Since glass is very fragile, plastic was introduced to replace it. The first mass production of plastic bottles dates back to 1939, in America, followed by Germany, which is currently one of the main producers of machines for blow moulding.

Steps of blowing in the manufacturing of motorcycle tanks

There are some steps in the blow moulding process of motorcycle tanks.

  • Granule raw material is introduced in a heated cylinder.
  • Melted material is mixed, extruded and injected to form a hollow tube or preform.
  • Preform in secured in a suitable mould according to the final shape of the product.
  • Air is blown into the plastic, until it adheres to the walls of the mould
  • After the material has cooled and stiffen, the mould is uncoupled and the final product is obtained; this step concludes the blow moulding manufacturing process.

The manufacturing of motorcycle fuel tanks through blow moulding qualifies Fisem to offer its clients many solutions at a different level of complexity.
